Overview
The City of Roanoke is seeking an Accountant to maintain financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, journal entry preparation, processing projects associated with fixed asset routine transactions, and payroll information for grants and other similar tasks. Responsibilities include compiling and analyzing financial information for complex financial reports, preparing journal entries, financial reports and statements, verifying data, and performing reconciliations with written analyses of account fluctuations.
The successful candidate will assemble statistical and accounting data on request, assist independent auditors as required, assist other departments by providing information on financial matters, and prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed. They will provide oversight and assistance as required in the operation of municipal government business areas.
This is an exempt position.
Responsibilities- Maintain financial records and perform reconciliations.
- Prepare journal entries, financial reports, statements, and verify data for accuracy and currency.
- Compile and analyze financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports.
- Maintain specialized databases; research and recommend upgrades or modifications to departmental information management systems and procedures.
- Assemble statistical and accounting data on request.
- Assist independent auditors as required and provide information to other departments on financial matters.
- Research and provide financial data on request.
- Provide oversight and assistance in the operation of municipal government business areas.
- Apply systematic collection actions to collect delinquent accounts when applicable.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or ExperienceBachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in accounting or a related field preferred; three to five years of related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, financial reports, or governmental regulations. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints orally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of the organization.

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
