Engineering Technician

Description

The City of Roanoke is seeking an Engineering Technician to provide technical support for design, construction, and inspection of engineering improvement projects.

• Collect data relevant to designs and construction of public works projects.
• Prepare complete design drawings and maps of public works projects and coordinate with other departments.
• Prepare project specifications.
• Perform advanced engineering computations.
• Assist in site plan reviews, highway plans, floodplain, drainage, and other engineering design work.
• Conduct field inspections or construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans.
• Prepare reports and develop visual materials.
• Maintain liaison and coordinate with consulting engineers and planners in various studies and construction projects.
• Train other staff in new techniques.

Associate’s degree or equivalent in civil engineering technology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Three to five years of relevant experience or training in paraprofessional engineering work and computer‑aided drafting and design.
• Proficiency with civil engineering software.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, documents, and maps.
• Strong mathematical skills, including geometry, trigonometry, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
• Problem‑solving and reasoning ability to manage concrete variables in limited standardization environments.
• Valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
