The City of Roanoke is seeking an Engineering Technician to perform technical support work related to design, construction, and inspection of engineering improvement projects. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to collecting data relevant to the designs and construction of public works projects; preparing complete design drawings and maps of public works projects and coordinates with other departments; preparing project specifications;
performing difficult engineering computations; and assisting in site plan reviews, highway plans, flood plains, drainage and other engineering design work. Associate's degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school with major in civil engineering technology related field and three to five years related experience and/or training in paraprofessional engineering work and computer aided drafting and design II with work in civil engineering software;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARYEngineering:
Performs responsible technical support work related to design, construction, and inspection of engineering improvement projects and/or all aspects of various permitting processes within the Department of Public Works.
- Collects data relevant to the designs and construction of public works projects
- Prepares complete design drawings and maps of public works projects and coordinates with other departments
- Prepares project specifications
- Performs difficult engineering computations
- Assists in site plan reviews, highway plans, flood plains, drainage and other engineering design work
- Conducts field inspections or construction projects to insure compliance to approved plans
- Prepares reports and develops visual materials
- Maintains liaison and coordinates with consulting engineering and planners in various studies and construction projects
- Trains other staff in new techniques
Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEAssociate's degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school with major in civil engineering technology related field and three to five years related experience and/or training in paraprofessional engineering work and computer aided drafting and design II with work in civil engineering software; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, documents, and maps. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSMust possess a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
