Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking applicants for Elementary Special Education teacher for the 2026-27 school year.
Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia prior to August 2026.
Position Description/Job SummaryRoanoke County special education teachers are responsible for facilitating developmentally appropriate educational practices for students with disabilities in kindergarten through 12th grade or 22 years, depending on diploma status.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks- Develop weekly lesson plans that adhere to county-wide and curriculum based standards
- Ensure the health and safety of classroom students, including personal care and development, when necessary
- Write and administer Individual Education Plans for students with disabilities
- Maintain the IEP (monitoring all goals and objectives outlined in the IEP for mastery and progress, collecting data toward goals, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with timelines (IEPs, triennial reviews, evaluations, etc.)
- Oversee and guide Instructional Assistants working in the classroom environment
- Schedule, plan, and implement curriculum related activities and engaging units
- Organize a variety of educational learning experiences in and outside of the classroom
- Adhere to school policies and attend required division meetings and professional trainings
- Administer required assessments (i.e., formative assessments, SOL assessments, etc.)
- Create an environment with clear schedules, routines, and transitions conducive to learning
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with school personnel and the community
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with students, staff and families
- Consulting with teachers, related service personnel, students, and parents regarding student needs
- Consulting with outside agencies
- Maintaining appropriate documentation (i.e., student goals, records, evaluation components, progress reports, etc.)
Job Requirements /Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
A Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement at the appropriate level is required.
Positive interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical RequirementsSignificant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
