Performs responsible skilled recreational and supervisory work in accordance with the program standards for children and/or youth at an assigned location. Supervises Activity Leaders to include organizing, planning and participating in recreational activities with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13). Maintains required records, collects fees and prepares deposits. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Plans and actively participates with staff and children in activities including games, music, arts, crafts, and playground activities, as well as other appropriate activities
- Observes all activities to ensure the protection and safety of all participants
- Provides a positive and authoritative approach to guiding behavior using age-appropriate limits and choices
- Encourages children to take responsibility for their role in the classroom community
- Organizes and plans structured childcare and recreational activities for children five (5) through twelve (12) in a group environment in accordance with program standards
- Communicates with parents regarding behavior issues and works with parents to facilitate resolution
- Ensures children have proper rest periods
- Teaches good eating habits and personal hygiene
- Assists with orientation of participants and program promotion
Required: High school education or equivalent supplemented with college level courses or training in a childcare related field
ExperienceRequired: Three (3) or more years of programmatic experience, in a regulated program with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13), which has been obtained after the age of sixteen (16). Of the three years, one (1) year must be in a staff supervisory capacity.
Preferred: One (1) or more years appropriate experience in the group care of children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13)
Certifications / LicensesRequired: Must have and maintain Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates or obtain same after employment. Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge, skill and interest in recreational activities suitable for children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13) in a group setting
- Ability to deal effectively with participants, encourage participation in the various activities; and to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, participants and the general public
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adhere to program rules and objectives
- Ability to maintain order, enforce rules and follow discipline procedures
- Ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of others
Must be age twenty-one (21) or older. Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must submit to a Tuberculosis test. Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervises an assigned shift of employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing complaints.
