Job Summary
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Senior Accountant to perform work in the maintenance of complex financial records. The successful candidate will prepare journal entries, budget transactions, and account reconciliations; assist in the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and with annual external audit; prepare reports and budget ordinances for presentation to Council; prepare financial statements to be presented monthly to Council;
and prepare financial analyses and financial reports for external agencies as needed.
- Prepare journal entries, budget transactions, and account reconciliations.
- Assist in the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and with annual external audit.
- Prepare reports and budget ordinances for presentation to Council.
- Prepare financial statements to be presented monthly to Council.
- Prepare financial analyses and financial reports for external agencies as needed.
- Assist in the preparation of data for the City’s annual budget process.
- Assist in preparing accounting system for annual closing.
- Review current accounting procedures and recommend needed improvements.
- Prepare responses to financial surveys.
- Coordinate the preparation of annual cost allocation plan and the annual comparative cost report.
- Participate in the implementation of accounting system improvements including subsystem implementations.
- Participate in special projects; research and prepare management reports as needed.
- Bachelor s degree from a four-year college or university in accounting or a related field.
- Three to five years of related experience and/or training in accounting and/or auditing, preferably in a public accounting firm or through specialization in the government sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Public Accountant preferred.

Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, interpret journals, financial reports, or governmental regulations. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints orally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of the organization. - Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. - Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form. - Computer
Skills:
Knowledge of Word Processing software and Spreadsheet software.
