Nursing Assistant - Medical Surgical Unit
Position Summary: The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

problem solving, data collection, infection control, and cost savings. - Participates in
Education:
attends staff development programs, fulfills mandatory education, and assists in orientation of new staff. - Follows hospital and unit policies: provides quality patient care, maintains NAI licensure/certification, and stays familiar with role’s legal implications.
- Builds interpersonal relations: listens, gives constructive feedback, recognizes conflicts, works team‑oriented, and uses chain of command.
- Makes unit, department, and hospital contributions: participates in goal setting and assists in cost‑effective use of equipment and supplies.
- Under RN supervision, assists in direct patient care and completes delegated skills.
- Monitors patients for escalating behaviors, alerts nurse, maintains observation per plan of care, communicates with the care team, documents accurately, provides hazard surveillance, and engages patients in distraction activities.
- High School or GED preferred; higher education is an asset.
- NAI listing with NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
- Experience in a comparable facility can be substituted for NAI course by successful completion of a challenge exam acceptable to the NC Dept of Health and Human Services.
- Current American Heart Association Heart Saver or higher certification is required.
- De‑escalation training required within 90 days of hire, maintained throughout employment.
Location: ECU Health North Hospital – Medical Surgical Unit
Shift: Nights
Hours: Full‑Time (36 hrs/week) 7 PM–7 AM
Weekends: Rotating
On‑Call: No
