Position Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NC Department of Health & Human Services. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

- Participates in quality improvement (QI) activities, problem solving, and identifies opportunities for improvement to change behavior. Participates in data collection and employs safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations. Participates in cost savings activities.
- Participates in education by attending staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives. Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements. Participates in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
- Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures to provide quality patient care. Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of the role. Maintains active NAI and NAII licensure/certification.
- Builds interpersonal relations and communications, listens to ideas and feedback, and recognizes and intervenes when personal conflicts may interfere with patient care or team relationships. Works effectively in a team environment and fosters respectful interactions and teamwork. Seeks help and uses the chain of command appropriately.
- Makes unit, department, and hospital contributions by participating in unit goal setting and assisting in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
- Under the supervision of the licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks ascribed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- With appropriate education and training, may perform other duties as assigned (such as EKGs, Phlebotomy, venipuncture, assisting in admission, transport, and discharge of patient).
- Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors; alerts the nurse if there is risk to the patient or others; maintains observation level per patient care plan and as ordered in the medical record. Communicates effectively with the patients care team, documents accurately in established workflows, and provides hazard surveillance to reduce risk. Engages the patient in appropriate distraction activities as needed.
- High School diploma or GED is preferred — or higher.
- Active NAI listing with NC Department of Health & Human Services is required.
- Current American Heart Association Heart Saver or higher certification is required.
- De-escalation training (Non-violent Crisis Intervention or other de-escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at time of hire, must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment. Not required for Ambulatory clinical positions.
- 1+ year NAII experience in acute hospital
- 1+ year NAII experience in skilled care/nursing home
- 1+ year NAII experience in nursing home

Shift:
Rotating
Hours: PRN (As Needed). Requires a minimum of one 12-hour shift worked per six-week scheduling period.
