Senior Systems Engineer – AWS Utility Computing (UC)

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations – from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart from the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be a technical leader for your team and a subject‑matter expert in multiple services. You will work efficiently and routinely deliver the right solutions with limited guidance, using technology to solve complex problems and drive improvements to services and features. You will identify when implementations are not highly available, performant, secure, stable, maintainable, or have defects and determine short‑ and long‑term mitigations.
Your depth and breadth of understanding across technology areas, coupled with your Linux expertise, will enable you to troubleshoot, innovate fixes and workarounds, keep software up‑to‑date, and provide data and metrics that help manage capacity and efficiency of services.
You will lead team design, scoping, and prioritization discussions, understand how technical decisions impact your team and others, and recommend opportunities and solutions. You will optimize and automate team processes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. You will drive SOP, documentation, and runbook creation and review for accuracy, advocating best practices. You will actively recruit, interview, coach, and mentor teammates while communicating clearly to deliver results.
You will be a self‑starter comfortable with ambiguity and change, customer‑obsessed, and eager to resolve pain points quickly and completely.

Basic Qualifications- Advanced knowledge in Linux system administration
- Significant experience in systems automation using BASH, Python, Perl, or similar
- Significant experience in network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, switching, HTTP)
- Excellent troubleshooting skills at all levels, from application to network to host
- Experience writing technical documents, project plans, and progress reports to leadership and stakeholders
- Experience building and operating systems at scale
- Advanced knowledge of configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or related systems
- Significant experience with monitoring frameworks such as Cloud Watch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic, or similar
