Job SummaryHeavy Duty Vehicle Testing Specialist – Air Pollution Specialist within the Measurement and Technology Assessment (MTA) Section of the Freight Emissions Testing and Research Branch. Responsible for operating CARB’s heavy‑duty chassis dynamometer test cells, conducting emissions tests, and developing research projects in collaboration with state and federal agencies, universities, and industry stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Conduct heavy‑duty vehicle installation on the chassis dynamometer, connect exhaust transfer lines and perform pre‑test setup.
- Execute emissions tests according to established test plans and CARB protocols.
- Conceptualize research topics, develop test plans, procure resources, and manage test projects.
- Prepare and present technical reports, peer‑reviewed papers, and presentations to CARB and the public.
- Collaborate with laboratory clients, local air pollution control districts, the U.S. EPA, and OEM stakeholders.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of CARB programs, heavy‑duty vehicle technology, and relevant regulations.
- Adhere to attendance schedules and complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and telephone.
- Potentially moving equipment up to 50 pounds; accommodation may be provided.
- Work in office, vehicle shop, non‑temperature‑controlled areas, and during vehicle operations.
- 3 % pay reduction for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly, effective July 1, 2025.
- Required by the Classification Specification for AIR POLLUTION SPECIALIST.
- Experience in heavy‑duty emissions testing, chassis dynamometer operation, and research program development.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Eligibility for California state employment (including SROA, Surplus, or other state listings).
- Hands‑on testing experience and mechanical inclination.
- Deep understanding of combustion power, emissions characteristics, and data analysis.
- Knowledge of heavy‑duty powertrain technologies, including electrified and hybrid systems.
- Familiarity with driverless and connected vehicle technology.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑changing environment.
