Overview
The County of Riverside TLMA Transportation Department has multiple opportunities for Truck Mechanics, located in Riverside. The Truck Mechanic will perform a wide range of services on medium and heavy-duty gas and diesel trucks and trailers, including servicing, adjusting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical defects. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies.
Responsibilities- Inspect and diagnose mechanical failures and defects in a variety of heavy trucks.
- Rebuild or repair engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, steering gears, carburetors, cooling systems, and other mechanical and electrical assemblies.
- Complete tune-ups on carburetion, fuel injection, and ignition systems.
- Replace and adjust air, hydraulic and vacuum brakes, starters, and generators.
- Repair smaller automotive equipment when required; rough welding; maintain time and material records.
- Completion of a recognized heavy-duty truck mechanic apprenticeship training program. (Option I)
- Four years in the repair and overhaul of heavy diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Substitutions: completion of trade-related college courses (12 semester or 24 quarter units) equal two years of experience.
- Four years in the repair and overhaul of heavy diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Substitutions: 144 hours of trade-related courses from a recognized training center equal six months of full-time experience.
- Experience with:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAT ET, CUMMINS In-Site, Bendix software, and knowledge of Asset Works or other preventive maintenance software; ability to maintain vehicle records per DOT standards. - Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program knowledge and/or welding/fabrication is highly desired.
- Possession of a valid California Driver License:
Class B with tanker endorsement and ability to work around automotive/heavy equipment fluids/odors. - Knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engines; the tools and parts used to repair and maintain heavy trucks; the operations and uses of diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical failures, read shop manuals, follow directions, and work safely.
- For DOT-designated safety-sensitive positions, compliance with DOT alcohol and drug screening requirements and DMV driving record submission is required.
The anticipated work schedule is 4/10.
Pre-Employment and Policy- All offers are contingent on a pre-employment physical exam (including drug/alcohol test) and criminal background investigation (fingerprinting).
