Assistant Manager, Food Services

Position Type:
Classified Management/Supervisor, Full‑Time, 12‑month.

Salary:
Grade O ($106,113 - $129,192 annually).

Basic Function: Deliver a first‑class Food Service program, manage daily operations, schedule employees, and operate within budget, ensuring prompt, courteous, professional service.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises classified staff, students, and hourly workers.

Education

High school diploma required. Two years of college in Hospitality, Culinary Arts, or Business Administration, or equivalent through experience.

Experience

Two years of food service supervisory or management experience; experience in a college environment desired.

Knowledge

Food service budgeting, financial data handling, campus mission and values, interpersonal communications.

Abilities

Train staff in quantity cooking, communicate effectively in English (conversational Spanish helpful), intermediate computer skills (Internet, Excel, Word), and point‑of‑sale system usage.

Licenses & Certifications

Serv Safe certification.

Commitment to Diversity

Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of students, staff and community.

Physical Effort

Walking, standing, light lifting up to 25 lb; dexterity in operating equipment.

Working Conditions

Food service environments: wet floors, small storage, hot products, hot/cold climate areas.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages and directs daily food service operations with a hands‑on approach.
  • Establishes and maintains effective internal controls.
  • Delivers highest quality food service through existing programs, menu preparation, and marketing.
  • Trains, supervises, disciplines, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Implements standardized recipes, correct portioning, controls food, beverage, and labor costs.
  • Directs scheduled catering functions throughout campus.
  • Prioritizes employee, customer, and operational needs.
  • Participates in daily operations including opening and closing.
  • Promotes positive communication, addresses complaints, resolves problems.
  • Builds strong campus and community relations.
  • Manages reconciliation of daily cash receipts per policy.
  • Abides by all federal/state governmental, college, union regulations, and labor standards.
  • Demonstrates prudent judgment for employee morale and culture.
  • Acts as liaison to contracted vendors.
  • Orders food and beverages; reviews deliveries and invoices; maintains invoice log.
  • Works collaboratively with District administrator and Director of Food Service.
  • Monitors and takes corrective action for budget, profitability, and image.
  • Performs administrative duties daily (voicemail, email, scheduling, spreadsheets, evaluations, equipment upkeep).
  • Knowledge of high volume cooking and assists in menu preparation.
  • Prepares administrative reports as required.
  • Maintains understanding of current ideas, research and practices for the role.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and unobstructed workspace.
  • Applies Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards.
  • Serves as a member of the Management Association.
  • Continues professional development in related areas.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.

    Paid vacation: 22 days annually; paid sick leave: 12 days annually. Health and welfare benefits for employees and qualifying dependents.
