Manufacturing Production, Manufacturing Engineer, Machine Operator, Quality Engineering
Why This Role Matters
This role directly impacts part quality, downstream fabrication, and on‑time delivery to customers. The laser operator is not just running a machine—you are responsible for accuracy, material utilization, and ensuring parts move through the shop right the first time. Mistakes here create scrap, delays, and rework. Precision and ownership matter.
Who This Role Is a Good Fit ForThis role is a strong fit for an experienced laser operator who takes pride in setup accuracy, clean cuts, and consistent results. You are comfortable working independently, making informed adjustments at the machine, and catching issues before they become problems. You care about tolerances, material behavior, and doing the job correctly—not just getting parts off the table.
Who This Role Is Likely Not a Fit ForThis role is not a fit for entry‑level operators, button‑pushers, or candidates who require step‑by‑step direction for setups. It is also not ideal if you prefer programming‑only roles, office‑based work, or environments with minimal accountability for quality and scrap.
Key Responsibilities- Independently set up and operate CNC fiber laser cutting machines, including full job changeovers
- Read and interpret detailed blueprints, CAD files, work orders, and fabrication specifications
- Select, verify, and run cutting programs; confirm parameters such as power, speed, gas, focus, and material type
- Perform first‑article inspections and ongoing in‑process quality checks
- Monitor cut quality and machine performance; make real‑time adjustments as needed
- Identify and troubleshoot common machine, material, and process‑related issues
- Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools and document results accurately
- Load and unload sheet metal and finished parts safely and efficiently
- Perform routine preventative maintenance including lens/nozzle changes, cleaning, and basic mechanical adjustments
- Detect and report defective materials, tooling issues, or process deviations
- Accurately complete production, quality, and maintenance documentation
- Operate multiple laser platforms as required (Amada, Bystronic, Eagle)
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
Required Qualifications (Non‑Negotiable)
- 3–5+ years of hands‑on experience operating CNC fiber laser cutting machines
- Proven ability to perform full machine setups without supervision
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and fabrication drawings
- Experience inspecting parts to tight tolerances using measuring tools
- Solid understanding of sheet metal materials and cutting characteristics
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience operating Amada, Bystronic, and/or Eagle laser systems
- Familiarity with laser cutting software interfaces and CNC controls
- Experience in a high‑mix, low‑to‑medium volume fabrication environment
- Demonstrated track record of low scrap and high‑quality output
- Experience supporting or mentoring less experienced operators
- Independently completing setups and changeovers with minimal oversight
- Producing parts that consistently meet quality and dimensional standards
- Demonstrating sound judgment when adjusting parameters or addressing issues
- Maintaining clean documentation and inspection records
- Earning trust as a reliable operator who protects quality and material
This is a shop that values craftsmanship, accuracy, and accountability. Operators are trusted to run their machines correctly and are expected to take ownership of quality. If you care about doing the work right, improving your technical skill set, and working in an environment where standards matter, this role offers long‑term growth and stability.
