The Riverside County Department of Animal Services has an opportunity for a Supervising Animal Services Counselor in the Volunteer Services division located in Jurupa, CA. This position will also be working with other divisions in the department throughout the County of Riverside. This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies throughout Riverside County.

The Supervising Animal Services Counselor will be organizing volunteers, events, and engagement activities; tracking program data; serving as the primary point of contact for inquiries and concerns; coordinating schedules, hours, and records; training and onboarding new volunteers; collaborating with other divisions; assisting customers with adoptions and lost‑and‑found needs; overseeing volunteer activities; supporting marketing and social media efforts; traveling to events throughout the county;

and recruiting volunteers. The supervisor will regularly present, train, and provide guidance to staff, volunteers, and the public.

Additionally, under direction, this position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising animal intake and improving animal outcomes for the Department of Animal Services; assisting the Animal Services Manager with administering program activities including pet intake, animal outcomes, shelter adoptions, adoption outreach, and adoption‑partner coordination; acting as a liaison between community groups, private agencies, and other governmental jurisdictions; and performing other related duties as required.

Required
  • Carrying and lifting animals; assisting with animal handling; setting up event equipment; walking, bending, pushing, and pulling as needed for daily operations.
  • Must be able to work irregular work schedules such as weekends, evenings and holidays, as required.
  • A valid CA Driver's License.
Highly Desired Experience and Abilities
  • Experience working with shelters and volunteer program planning.
  • Recruiting/coordinating new staff and/or volunteers.
  • Strong and friendly customer service experience in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, overtime, and holidays.

The Supervising Animal Services Counselor is the full supervisory level classification in the Animal Services Counselor series and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for directing the day‑to‑day operations and training of Animal Services Counselor staff throughout the County of Riverside. The Supervising Animal Services Counselor is distinguished from the Senior Animal Services Counselor by the former’s responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and operate community outreach and adoption events.
  • Direct the operations of animal intakes and outcomes, pet support for clients, general handling of animals, marketing efforts to encourage redemptions and adoptions of animals, computer update, and accounting activities for monies received.
  • Interview and select new employees; prepare and review employee performance evaluations; counsel employees, attempt to resolve grievances and when necessary, recommend disciplinary action.
