Overview
The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical related functions under the direct supervision of the physician and practice manager. The Medical Assistant supports clinic patient flow by assisting members of the patient care team and providing a wide range of health care services while supporting quality and safe care. May float to other practices as needed to support operational needs within the region.
WhatYou Will Do
- Maintain clinical competency by adhering to standard clinical expectations, including updating, verifying, and maintaining patient records by interviewing the patient and confirming the purpose of visit.
- Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining vital signs (including manual vital signs when devices are unavailable) and by sanitizing exam rooms before and after appointments.
- Administer medications and vaccines under supervision of a physician and assist with processing prescription refills for approval and forwarding to pharmacies.
- Maintain medical inventory, stock exam rooms, and ensure equipment is in good operating order with preventive maintenance as needed.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, scope of practice, HIPAA, and OSHA standards.
- Complete required competencies and education to maintain skill level for safe patient care.
- Act as a liaison between physician and patient, providing support and comfort during visits and procedures, including chaperoning when required. Deliver excellent customer service with timely responses and follow-up, manage patient expectations and provider schedules, assist with appointments, referrals, and information, and educate patients per protocol in the after-visit summary within the electronic medical record.
- Demonstrate knowledge of lab procedures including specimen collection, phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, and use of ABNs (as applicable). Properly process and package specimens and send to the correct laboratory. Obtain preauthorizations when needed and manage point-of-care logs and documentation in the electronic health record.
- Follow insurance carrier guidelines and Medicare regulations. Maintain knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding and obtain prior authorizations as needed. Schedule tests and specialist visits within network limitations.
- Support productivity and quality goals by maximizing the use of facility resources and helping meet organizational targets.
- Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required) - Program Graduate
Medical Assistant (Required)
- Experience
1 year clinical experience (Preferred)
- Licenses and Certifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA Upon Hire (Required) or
CPR/BLS Certification – AHA/ARC/American Safety and Health Institute Upon Hire (Required) or
CCMA – NHA Upon Hire (Required) or
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AMT Upon Hire (Required) or
Medical Assistant – NCCT Upon Hire (Required) or
MA – ARMA Upon Hire (Required) or
Other nationally recognized CMA/MA credential upon hire (Required)
