Overview

Are you interested in becoming a future leader in the community? The City of Richmond is accepting applications for the position of Police Cadet. The goals of the Police Cadet program are to expose individuals to the various aspects of police work to prepare them for a career in law enforcement. Police Cadets promote the community’s opportunity to enjoy a safe and positive environment.

Police Cadets wear uniforms, do not carry firearms, and do not have sworn Police Officer status. They work outdoors in all weather conditions and may be required to work shifts, weekends and holidays. The Police Cadet classification is Unrepresented.

Successful candidates must not have felony or crime of moral turpitude convictions and must pass a polygraph exam, a background investigation and, depending on assignment, may be required to pass a Physical Agility Test.

Highly motivated candidates considering a career in law enforcement will perform a wide variety of support and administrative duties in a learning capacity, assist and observe police officers and other personnel, and may gain additional experience for a career in law enforcement. Cadets in this assignment must complete a 160-hour Police Cadet training program and meet physical fitness standards.

Responsibilities

The following duties illustrate typical work and may vary by assignment:

  • Operate police information equipment, enter and research information under supervision, and assist in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence.
  • Photocopy, file, index and locate police records and related documents.
  • Ride with Police Officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques.
  • Perform errands for the department, such as transporting information.
  • Provide traffic direction and control for special events.
  • Receive information and complaints from the public and relay information to appropriate departmental personnel.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications

Ability to: Learn the principles, practices, procedures, laws and terminology related to law enforcement and crime prevention, and operate related equipment.

Education: High school graduation or equivalent, and current enrollment in good standing at a college or university OR current high school enrollment with status as a Senior.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

The City’s policy requires all persons hired on or after October 18, 2021 to be fully vaccinated, including the booster, with proof of complete vaccination or an approved medical or religious accommodation before employment may commence. For questions, contact Human Resources.

Physical Requirements

License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements: Uncorrected 20/100 vision in each eye, corrected to 20/30 in each eye; normal color vision and normal hearing.

Other Requirements

Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Desirable qualifications and responsibilities are listed below.

  • Learn to interpret and apply laws, codes, policies, and procedures related to law enforcement information and records management systems; maintain accurate records and files; operate office equipment; work courteously with the public and other agencies; follow written and oral directions; communicate clearly and concisely; work outdoors in all weather; operate a two-way radio; operate an automobile; and spend long hours on foot.
  • Desirable qualifications for the Police Cadet Assignment include:
  • Possess at least a 2.0 GPA;
  • Show active interest in a law enforcement career; and
  • Successfully pass a Physical Agility Test measuring required physical abilities.
Additional Requirements
  • No felony convictions.
  • No use of specified drugs within the past five years (Cocaine, Hallucinogens, LSD, Heroin, Methamphetamine, MDMA, Psilocybin).
  • No marijuana use within the past two years.
  • Successful candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, which may include criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph, credit check and drug history check.
  • Must be able to qualify to use protective respirator equipment and maintain certification.
Application and Selection Process
  • Applicants must apply online by fully completing the City of Richmond Employment Application and answers to supplemental questions. All communications will be via email from a monitored address.
  • Application Screening:
    Applications will be evaluated based on job-related qualifications. Qualified applications will be referred to the Police Department for review and remain active for one year.
  • The Police Department will review applications and select better-qualified candidates for an oral board interview.
  • Candidates must pass a Physical Agility Test to be considered for an interview. The test includes three events: 25 sit-ups in 2 minutes, 25 push-ups in 2 minutes, 440 yard run in 2 minutes.
