Position Overview

The County of Riverside Department of Waste Resources is seeking to fill one Gate Services Assistant vacancy to support operations at the Corona location.

Incumbents will assess and collect user fees at landfill sites, enforce rules, regulations and policies regarding landfill operations, and keep records of waste collected and revenue received.

Competitive candidates will possess experience in high‑volume customer service positions, leadership roles, cash handling & balancing cash drawers, processing payments via credit/debit terminal, and knowledge of MS Office Suite. Previous landfill experience is highly desired. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

This position will be 9/80 with hours varying throughout the week, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, and some nights.

IMPORTANT: This position will require travel to all landfill locations. For example, every few days the selected candidate will report to a new location (Moreno Valley, Beaumont, Corona or Oasis) based on the needs of the department. Meet the Department

The Department of Waste Resources serves the County’s solid waste disposal needs by providing efficient and effective landfilling of County non‑hazardous waste, protecting the environment, and promoting recycling to ensure a safe and healthy community for current and future generations.

Responsibilities
  • Screen customers to determine proper classification of waste materials and recyclables, and provide directions for dumping locations.
  • Prohibit dumping of unacceptable waste and refer haulers to appropriate sites where possible; use platform scales to weigh vehicles and determine tare weight if necessary.
  • Calculate and collect appropriate fees; assess and determine fees based on classification and weight/volume; collect via cash, credit card, or Department account; issue receipts and record material type for each transaction.
  • Prepare daily reports of revenue and receipts; maintain scale and scale house in safe condition; prepare and deliver daily bank deposits.
  • Provide customer service; answer inquiries and provide general information regarding operating hours, site locations, directions; explain landfill rules, safety protocols, and dumping instructions.
  • Troubleshoot computer equipment issues; relay problems to appropriate staff and process customers manually if needed.
  • Open and close site daily and assist with traffic control; control traffic when congested; notify supervisor of stalled vehicles; ensure site is clear of visitors at closing.
  • Keep track of supplies and inventory, and submit requests as needed.
  • Operate and perform checks on diesel generator as required.
  • Exercise right to refuse entry to customers not conforming to regulations.
Educational & Experience Requirements
  • Option I – High school graduation or Certificate of Proficiency or satisfactory G.E.D. score; six months customer service with primary responsibility for cash handling.
  • Option II – High school graduation or Certificate of Proficiency or satisfactory G.E.D. score; six months performing clerical work directly related to landfill operations.
  • All Options – Knowledge of simple record‑keeping procedures and basic arithmetic; ability to read, understand, and apply regulations, categorize objects consistently, perform quick and accurate arithmetic, keep accurate records, explain and enforce regulations, accept responsibility and work independently, communicate effectively, and investigate complaints.
Working Conditions
  • Maximum amount of time working at various landfills in a fee collection booth.
  • Will sit and/or stand at CRT entering customer/hauler information.
  • Must utilize portable restroom facilities.
  • May direct traffic (customers and/or haulers) outside of booth.
  • Tools, aids, equipment, and materials: considerable time using CRT and adding machine.
License Requirement

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required at the time of application.
