Position Summary
:
The Special Education Instructional Coach is responsible for strengthening the instructional capacity of special education teachers and improving outcomes for students with disabilities through collaborative coaching, professional development, compliance support, and data‑driven instructional practices.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled special educator who can lead targeted professional development, facilitate collaborative planning, ensure IEP implementation fidelity, and execute structured coaching cycles. This individual will support both resource and inclusion teachers while partnering with general education staff to ensure high‑quality, specially designed instruction (SDI) across all content areas.
Key ResponsibilitiesProfessional Development
Design and facilitate high‑quality professional development focused on special education best practices, specially designed instruction (SDI), inclusion models, behavior supports, and differentiated instruction.
Provide ongoing instructional support aligned to school goals, district expectations, and IDEA requirements.
Train teachers on IEP development, goal writing, progress monitoring, and compliance procedures.
Stay current on federal, state, and district special education regulations and research‑based instructional practices.
Instructional Planning & IEP SupportConduct regular planning meetings with special education teachers to support lesson design, accommodations, modifications, and SDI implementation.
Support alignment between IEP goals and daily instruction.
Assist teachers in developing differentiated lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, emotional/behavioral disabilities, and other exceptionalities.
Collaborate with general education teachers to strengthen co‑teaching models and inclusive practices.
Review IEPs and instructional plans to ensure fidelity of services and compliance with timelines.
Data Analysis & Progress MonitoringLead data meetings focused on IEP goal progress, benchmark assessments, formative assessments, and intervention data.
Support teachers in using student data to adjust instruction and implement targeted interventions.
Guide teachers in collecting and analyzing progress monitoring data to ensure measurable student growth.
Assist in developing action plans when students are not demonstrating adequate progress toward IEP goals.
Coaching CyclesExecute structured coaching cycles with special education teachers and inclusion teams.
Conduct pre‑ and post‑observation conferences focused on SDI delivery, accommodations, and instructional rigor.
Model lessons, co‑teach, and provide actionable, compliance‑aligned feedback.
Monitor the implementation of strategies and track coaching outcomes to ensure both teacher growth and improved student achievement.
Serve as a resource for teachers regarding instruction, behavior intervention plans (BIPs), IEP compliance, documentation, and service delivery models.
Support preparation for IEP meetings and attend meetings as needed to ensure instructional alignment.
Promote a culture of collaboration between general education and special education staff.
Partner with administration to ensure school‑wide alignment in MTSS, intervention systems, and inclusive practices.
Support onboarding and mentoring of new special education teachers.
QualificationsMaster’s degree in Special Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field (required or strongly preferred).
Minimum of 3–5 years of successful special education teaching experience (elementary experience preferred; 4th and 5th grade experience a plus).
Demonstrated expertise in IEP development, progress monitoring, and compliance requirements.
Experience leading professional development and facilitating adult learning.
Strong knowledge of differentiated instruction, co‑teaching models, behavior management strategies, and MTSS frameworks.
Experience implementing coaching cycles and providing direct instructional coaching.
