POSITION SUMMARYThe Health Sciences Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic guidance to Pre‑Nursing students pursuing health science degrees in collaboration with college faculty advisors. As a member of the Advising Team, the Advisor partners with staff, faculty, and students to deliver holistic advising services that support student success, retention, and engagement. Through coaching, mentoring, and individualized advising plans the Advisor supports students’ academic development and self‑efficacy.
The role also collaborates across divisional units to identify and address institutional barriers to student success, with continued focus on supporting Hispanic student achievement.
- Provide comprehensive, holistic advising services to a diverse undergraduate student population.
- Maintain a caseload of students who intend to pursue a major within Borra College of Health Sciences (BCHS) but have not yet met the prerequisites as well as those students who have recently changed their BCHS major.
- Collaborate with BCHS faculty and staff, other departments, and individuals across the university to provide workshops and test preparation and promote and implement student success and retention.
- Serve on appropriate university committees in ways that enhance the work of the Student Success & Engagement division.
- Participate in professional development to deepen expertise in the advising profession.
- Support the Title V A3 grant requirements
- Assist in academic advising for new students (first‑year & transfer) during all SOAR programs (summer & winter).
- Support admissions events such as visiting days, Discover Dominican, Express Transfer events, etc.
- Assist efforts to improve retention and graduation rates and report relevant information required by the Title V A3 HSI Grant to the Office of HSI.
- Serve as a member of the Student Care Team to craft interventions for students presenting with academic and interpersonal challenges, provide accompaniment and advocacy for complex challenges.
- Make timely referrals for on and off‑campus resources to support academic success, physical and/or mental health, basic needs, financial stress, career exploration, and more.
- Other duties as required and/or assigned by Supervisor
- Bachelor's Degree
- One to three years of experience in the area of academic advising or higher education
- Proficiency in MS Office programs and student database systems
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; team‑building and cross‑cultural interpersonal skills
- Specific experience assisting students with meeting academic, professional, and personal goals
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to work effectively with university students, faculty, and administrators
- Ability to work some nights and weekends
- Experience working and communicating with underrepresented groups
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication
- Strong time management and organization skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Ability to spend long durations of the workday sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
- Salary: $45,000 - $54,000 annually
- FLSA Status:
Exempt, 37.5 hours - Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
