190-day contract
Position SummaryThe Health Assistant works closely with the school nurse providing acute and chronic health care for students. You must be able to work independently under the direction of the school nurse while following all policies and procedures. Health Assistants perform vision and hearing screenings, administer medications, and maintain school records including electronic health documentation and immunizations and other various tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent
- New Mexico licensure; must hold or be able to obtain a Level 3 K-12 Educational Assistant License
- Must hold or be able to obtain a NMPED Health Assistant License
- Must hold or be able to obtain a Substitute License
Maintain current AHA CPR/AED, Red Cross First Aid certification.
Completes yearly training provided by RRPS on Asthma, Diabetes, Epi Pen Administration, Medication Administration, Diastat Administration, Vision and Hearing Screening and other health trainings as required by nurse or health services department.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Assists in non-professional school health functions and adheres to health room guidelines and RRPS health room policies.
- Maintains school health records, as directed, including immunization records and student health records.
- Administers first aid to students and staff
- Refers students to school nurse as appropriate
- Performs routine office and clerical duties
- Maintains stock of nursing supplies, maintains bulletin boards and other information material for health office
- Demonstrates respect for confidential information
- Performs vision, hearing, height and weight screening as assigned by school nurse
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education, activities, and/or self-selected professional growth activities
- Maintains clean organized health room environment
- Refers medical, psychological, or social/emotional problems to the school nurse
- Administers medication as directed by the principal in accordance with the Rio Rancho Public Schools Medication Policy
- Performs other duties as assigned.
First aid supplies, scales; thermometer; beds; portable stretchers, vision testing equipment; audiometer; wheelchairs.
Work HoursWork hours will be in accordance with hours determined by the school district and individual schools within parameters of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
