The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain cable systems by installing, programming, upgrading cable infrastructure, and performing major and minor preventive maintenance and repairs. The Technician will identify, track, and remove abandoned cable, test newly installed or relocated cable in accordance with established procedures, keep cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards, and develop in‑depth knowledge of National Building Codes and standards.
Additionally, technicians must install closet hardware such as connecting blocks, fiber enclosures, racks, backboards, and patch panels, and may work on all aspects of the telecommunications industry including wiring practices, color code and terminations, signal flow, signal path, DSL and Ethernet connections, and more.
- Maintain cable systems by installing, repairing, programming, and upgrading cable infrastructure
- Liaise between building facilities and commercial contractors, approving cabling for remodels and new construction
- Perform major and minor preventive maintenance and repairs by solving cabling system issues; keep cable tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards
- Identify, track and remove abandoned cable
- Test every newly installed or relocated cable in accordance with established procedures
- Develop in‑depth knowledge of National Building Codes and standards
- Bend and run conduit with digital multimeters
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED
- 1+ years of experience in cabling systems and/or related fields such as twisted pair copper, DS3 coax, and installation of Cat5e/6 structured cabling systems according to industry standards (EIA/TIA, BICSI, NEC)
- Knowledge of diagnostic tools, service aids, and product schematics to assess and resolve equipment and system failures
- Identification of various types of voice and data circuits
- Installation of voice switches, data network hardware, wireless access points, and Power over Ethernet
- Understand, adhere to, and promote environmental, health & safety policies
- Familiarity with industry tools and equipment
- Fundamental computer, network, and electronics skills and knowledge
- Strong troubleshooting and critical‑thinking skills
- Ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, program, and replace parts as needed
- Maintain accurate record‑keeping and processing of paperwork
- Work well independently and follow directions
- Handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously
