Quantity Surveyors are integral members of project and senior management teams, supporting project delivery daily. The role develops existing skills and encourages learning new ones in a collaborative, dynamic environment.
The RoleBarhale's civil engineering and infrastructure projects vary greatly (£200k – £10m+). In this role you will drive efficiencies, cost effectiveness and commercial analysis, managing risk and providing commercial acumen on a daily basis.
Key Responsibilities Commercial- Provide accurate, timely cost and value reporting at project and business unit levels.
- Provide accurate cash‑flow reporting.
- Manage cost and project forecasting.
- Draft and update monthly CVR, cost and commercial plans.
- Compile upstream applications for payment and cash management.
- Responsibility for subcontract procurement, negotiation and financial accounting.
- Prepare project applications for payment to final account settlement.
- Engage with clients, representatives and third parties on commercial issues, managing change, claims and additional payments.
- Forecast predicted expenditure and cash recovery in line with business expectations.
- Share best practices and advise site teams on cost management and efficiencies.
- Identify and realise commercial opportunities.
- Protect Barhale from commercial risks.
- Effectively manage contract and subcontract agreements (primarily IChemE and NEC).
- Ensure main contracts contain terms aligned with corporate governance and manage associated risks.
- Procure subcontracted works and manage post‑contract subcontract activities.
- Engage supply chain with correct contract terms.
- Maintain and build supply‑chain relationships.
- Support internal commercial processes, ensuring adherence to time frames and compliance.
- Seek opportunities to improve processes and procedures.
About you
- Previous construction industry experience.
- Familiarity with IChemE/NEC contracts and Construction Law.
- Experience in commercial management and subcontract procurement, including chairing meetings, measurement and control, certificates and accrual calculations.
- Monthly forecasting and cost analysis experience.
- Excellent communication, numerical and computer literacy; proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Strong organisation and time‑management skills, able to work under tight deadlines.
- Member of RICS or other professional body, or working towards membership.
- CSCS card.
- HND/degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying.
- Knowledge and experience in estimation.
- Experience with a direct‑delivery contractor.
- Engaging communicator with problem‑solving skills.
