Senior Quantity Surveyor

The Role

Quantity Surveyors are integral members of project teams, supporting delivery teams and senior management daily. They develop existing skills and learn new ones within a collaborative dynamic team, aiming to manage civil engineering projects of value £200k‑£10m+ and drive efficiencies, cost control and commercial analysis.

Key Responsibilities Commercial
  • Provide accurate and timely cost and value reporting at project and unit levels.
  • Provide accurate cash flow reporting.
  • Cost management and project forecasting.
  • Draft and update monthly CVR, cost and commercial plans.
  • Compile upstream applications for payment and cash management.
  • Manage subcontract procurement, negotiation and financial accounting.
  • Prepare project payment applications for final account settlement.
  • Engage with clients, representatives and third parties on commercial matters, including changes, claims and additional payment.
  • Forecast expenditure and cash recovery in line with business unit expectations.
  • Share best practices and advise site teams on cost management and efficiencies.
  • Identify and realise commercial opportunities.
  • Protect Barhale from commercial risks.
Contracts
  • Effectively manage contract and subcontract agreements, primarily IChemE and NEC forms.
  • Ensure main contracts align with Barhale’s governance and commercial risk management.
  • Procure subcontracted works and manage post‑contract subcontractors.
  • Ensure supply chain engagement with appropriate contract terms.
  • Maintain relationships within the supply chain.
Processes
  • Support internal commercial processes by ensuring adherence to time frames and compliance.
  • Actively seek to improve processes and procedures.
Essential About you
  • Previous experience in the construction industry.
  • Familiarity with IChemE/NEC contract forms and construction law.
  • Experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including meetings, measurements and accruals calculations.
  • Demonstrable experience in monthly forecasting and cost analysis.
  • Excellent communication, numeric and computer literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organisational and time‑management skills, able to work effectively under tight deadlines.
Desirable
  • Member of RICS or other relevant professional body, or working towards.
  • CSCS card.
  • HND/degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in estimation.
  • Experience working for a direct delivery contractor.
  • Excellent communicator with problem‑solving skills.
