Job DescriptionThe Department of Veterans Affairs, Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center (VAMC) located in Richmond, Virginia has a requirement to provide Wheelchair Van and Hired Car transportation for Veterans living in Central Virginia and occasional trips to other VAMC’s outside of Central Virginia for special care and treatment not provided by this VAMC. The services shall be provided twenty‑four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, to include Federal holidays.
The Contractor shall furnish all management, supervision, labor, materials, equipment, specified supplies, and resources necessary to provide Wheelchair Van and Hired Car transportation for wheelchair‑bound Veterans and other eligible special‑needs Veterans and beneficiaries. This includes one‑way and/or round‑trip transportation services on an as‑needed basis from the Veterans’ place of residence to the VAMC or private facilities in the community. In some cases, Veterans may require medical services at multiple locations.
In that event, the Contractor shall be able to pick up Veterans at their residence, drop them off at the VAMC, pick them up and drop them off at another private facility, and finally, return Veterans to their place of residence.
- Driver must be punctual in attendance and strict in maintaining manifest schedule.
- Driver will be on standby at the VAMC while waiting for an add‑on.
- Drivers working on weekends or holidays must return vehicle to Base and clock out during down time.
- Be expert in handling their vehicle.
- Have thorough knowledge of the roadways in and around the Richmond, VA area and the surrounding jurisdictions.
- Driver must complete pre and post daily vehicle inspections and onboard equipment. Malfunctions must be reported to the maintenance department as soon as possible.
- Driver must maintain all required logs and include details which his employer seeks during the work shift.
- Diffuse difficult situations and maintain order onboard vehicle.
- Adjust to variables in normal working conditions, including adverse weather, traffic and construction, passenger problems, accidents and trip changes.
- Secure vehicle in the event of accident or injury and communicate effectively with dispatch and operations staff.
- Driver is required to maintain regular communication with Account Coordinator and/or operations staff of their location via Direct Connect or two‑way radio.
- Driver must log each client in and out of the VA Medical Center in the log book housed at the front desk and log wait time on log with Lead at the VAMC Hunter McQuire.
- Provide excellent customer service including assistance on and off the vehicle, supplying information, and responding appropriately in the event of emergency.

- Report all incidents and accidents as soon as possible to Dispatch and Safety Manager.
- Successful completion of wheelchair securement certification.
- Successful completion of proper securement of all restraint and mobility devices.
- Ability to assist clients in manual wheelchairs up and down three (3) stairs.
- Ability to sustain long distance driving.
- Complete mandatory contractual training.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Driving history must be in adherence with the Safety Violation Policy.
- Must have clear local and national criminal history. No felony or misdemeanor involving drugs and/or violent crimes. (FBI clearance if applicable.)
- Must have high school diploma or equivalency.
- Verification of Child Protection Registry clearance.
