Markel is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of Claims Integrated Services within its Azure cloud ecosystem, focusing on scalable, secure, and intelligent cloud‑native applications that support automation, search, and AI‑driven claims capabilities; the role demands deep expertise in Azure architecture, C# (.NET Core), Python, RESTful APIs, and services like Azure Functions, Event Grid, and OpenAI, along with strong leadership, Dev Ops maturity, and experience in mentoring teams and aligning technical solutions with business goals, preferably within insurance or enterprise‑scale environments.

What we are looking for:

Markel is seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer to lead the development and solutioning of Claims Integrated Services within our Azure cloud ecosystem. This role is ideal for a hands‑on technical leader who thrives in a fast‑paced, agile environment and is passionate about building scalable, secure, and intelligent services that support the future of claims technology.

As a champion of engineering excellence, this individual will architect and deliver cloud‑native applications, guide the team through complex technical challenges, and collaborate across business and IT to shape the next generation of claims capabilities—including automation, search, and AI‑driven services.

What you’ll do:
  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of Azure‑based application services supporting claims automation, search, and intelligence.
  • Architect scalable, secure, and observable solutions using modern cloud‑native patterns and technologies.
  • Provide technical leadership across the full software development lifecycle—from ideation and design to deployment and support.
  • Collaborate with Solution Architects, Product Owners, and cross‑functional teams to align technical solutions with business goals.
  • Establish and advocate for engineering best practices, coding standards, and Dev Ops maturity.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and accountability.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues and guide long‑term resolution strategies across integrated services.
  • Drive the evolution of intelligent claims services, including LLM‑based workflows, document automation, and advanced search capabilities.
About you:
  • Proven experience leading cloud‑native software engineering teams, ideally within insurance or enterprise‑scale environments.
  • Deep understanding of Azure architecture and service design, with a track record of delivering production‑grade applications.
  • Strong communicator who can translate complex technical concepts into clear business value.
  • Passionate about innovation, with a bias toward action and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Trusted advisor to both technical and business stakeholders, with a collaborative and outcome‑driven mindset.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving clarity in evolving technical landscapes.
Some things you have extensive experience with:
  • 8+ years programming in C# (.NET Core) and Python, with deep experience in building RESTful APIs and working with Azure Cosmos DB or SQL for data access.
  • 5+ years designing and developing scalable cloud‑native applications using Azure Functions, Azure Container Apps, and Azure API Management.
  • 5+ years building and integrating services with Azure Event Grid, Service Bus, and Integration Gateway.
  • 3+ years implementing CI/CD pipelines using Git Hub Actions or Azure Dev Ops, and managing infrastructure through Bicep or Terraform.
