Description

The City of Richmond Department of General Services is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Electrician, Senior in the Facilities Management Division. The incumbent will provide skilled electrical maintenance to a variety of systems and equipment, including installation, maintenance, and repair of lighting, motors, generators, controls, conduits, and wiring. This class may also lead or provide directions and training to other staff, including electricians with less experience.

Work may include on‑call emergency response, implementation of new electrical technologies (automated control systems, LED lighting, solar power), preventative maintenance of high and low voltage systems, troubleshooting, project oversight, reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and schematics, operating various equipment (bucket trucks, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, trenchers, bobcats, forklifts), diagnostic tools (ammeters, ohmmeters, circuit tracers, infrared imaging/thermography devices), monitoring energy usage, obtaining pricing for parts and materials, and following safety rules and regulations.

  • Provide maintenance and repairs to City electrical systems and equipment, including scheduling decisions.
  • Ensure proper operation of electrical systems by installing and maintaining circuits, lighting, motors, conduits, wiring, high voltage switch gears, and telemetering equipment.
  • Perform inspections of fire alarms and sprinkler equipment.
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks, including preventative maintenance work.
  • Maintain, test, and troubleshoot equipment; read blueprints, schematics, and code books; design electrical systems for power and lighting.
  • Execute administrative duties such as requesting and obtaining pricing for parts, equipment, and materials; update and enter information into the database management system; maintain records of work orders.
  • Assist other trades with lock‑out/tag‑out procedures, safety, and training activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Employees in this position are considered essential personnel and may be required to work beyond scheduled hours, during inclement weather, and during declared emergencies.
Qualifications, Special Certifications And Licenses Minimum Training and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Formal training in electrical functions.
  • Six years of electrician experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications.
Licensing, Certifications, And Other

Special Requirements
  • Valid current Journeyman Electrician certification.
  • Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Typical Knowledge
  • The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).
  • Electrical theory including Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, etc.
  • Utility plant operations, including processes for operating water purification plants.
  • Electrical and mechanical equipment/systems, including gearboxes, motors, air compressors, pumps, and equipment used at water purification plants and pumping stations.
  • Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
  • In‑depth knowledge of the CMMS system or similar system used to log work tasks, order parts and materials.
  • Mathematics, including geometric and algebraic formulas.
