* Leads a group of employees accomplishing materials examiner and identifier duties.
* Assigns work to employees and passes on instructions received from the supervisor.
* Trains and demonstrates proper work methods, procedures, and proper usage of materials handling or other equipment.
* Independently performs the full range of examining and identifying duties for the most complex categories of materials and equipment.
* Independently assigns coding classification and prepares detailed reports outlining the basis for final classification decisions.

Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid MHE license Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying.

Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
* Ability to do the work of a Materials Examiner and Identifier Leader without more than normal supervision (Screen-Out Element):
Instructs other workers on less complex work methods; refer to manuals as a means in answering questions related to the duties and responsibilities of the position; and adhere to all safety standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort:
Performs moderate to heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds; if items weigh in excess to 40 pounds requests assistance). Moves material by hand or handtruck. Heavier material is moved by material handling equipment, or with the assistance of co-workers. Some effort may be involved in opening or sealing crates, cartons, drums and other containers. Work requires standing and/or walking for lengthy periods of time and often requires bending, stooping, pushing, and/or pulling material.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a warehouse environment or at outside work areas on a year-round basis. Subject to incumbent weather when working in open storage areas or on docks. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes, when moving or handling equipment. Also subject to hazards involved in working in close proximity to moving equipment such as conveyors, tow-line systems, and materials handling equipment.
