Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center is named for two Medal of Honor recipients – Colonel Van Barfoot and Colonel Carl Sitter – and provides quality care for Virginia’s Veterans. This single-level facility features 200 single-occupancy rooms across four nursing units: two 60-bed skilled nursing care units, one 40-bed skilled nursing care unit, and one 40-bed secure Alzheimer’s dementia unit.

Open position:
Cook. Working hours are 11:45 AM - 8:15 PM and will include every other weekend.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Prepare and serve food and meals in accordance with planned menus, diet plans, recipes, proper portion control, temperature procedures, and facility policies
  • Review menus prior to tray line operation
  • Review over produced foods and utilize as alternates
  • Assist in checking trays for menu and diet preferences and accuracy
  • Ensure proper storage of foods and supplies
  • Assist the Director of Nutrition Services and/or Nutrition Supervisors in directing the activities of Nutrition employees
  • Direct and assist in cleaning and sanitizing work areas, equipment, floors, dishes, and utensils; follow all safety, infection control, and sanitation guidelines; complete cleaning assignments
  • Attend and participate in training and in-service education; assist in departmental orientation and training of other staff
  • Assist in promoting positive relationships with residents, such as the Adopt a Veteran Program, family members, visitors, and co-workers
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent Required
  • 1 Year Prior Experience in a Kitchen/Culinary Setting Required
  • Knowledge of food service operations
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with others, including staff members and residents
  • Ability to carry out the duties of the position with reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to work overtime as needed to support the business/facility
Additional Considerations
  • Three years' experience working in institutional food preparation or related field and experience working in skilled-nursing facilities also preferred
