Overview
Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs provide support to the organization by floating to multiple units and/or areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS). This flex pool includes Registered Nurses who work within inpatient areas to include adults and/or pediatrics. The flex pool provides support 24/7 to VCUHS inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop and other specialties within VCUHS. Reassignment may occur in 4-hour blocks.
This also includes an opportunity to float to other VCUHS facilities.
- Deliver and document direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
- Mobilize resources to meet individualized needs of patients and families; provide direction, education, and leadership at the unit level as appropriate.
- Demonstrate mastery of clinical skills and apply knowledge to a specific patient population; anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
- Serve as a role model in a clinical setting and collaborate with the care team to prevent illness and promote wellness and comfort.
- Adhere to unit policies, physician/licensed independent provider orders, and established nursing practice standards.
- Performance expectations vary by Clinical Nurse II (CN II) and Clinical Nurse III (CN III) roles, including nursing process use, patient/family education, leadership, and professional development.
- CN II:
Demonstrates problem-solving, assessment focus, discharge planning, and effective teamwork; maintains current knowledge and evidence-based practice. - CN III:
Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge, anticipates needs, leads and models best practice, and contributes to unit and department guidelines.
- Education/training
REQUIRED:
CN II or CN III Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing from an approved program. - All RNs without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years, unless grandfathered.
- Education/training PREFERRED: CN II/III with BSN; CN III certification in a specialty area.
- Licensure: CN II, CN III—Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
- Experience:
CN II typically 12–24 months RN experience; CN III typically 3 years clinical experience; academic health care experience and exposure to similar patient populations.
- Follows physician/licensed independent provider orders; practices within Virginia nursing regulations and ANA Code of Ethics.
- Adheres to VCUHS policies and procedures; can work all shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift rotation will be managed with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
- Ability to rotate schedules and meet unit requirements as needed.
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical Requirements- Physical:
Lifting 0-50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances. - Activities:
Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, writing, reading, analytical thinking. - Emotional:
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities; handle frequent and intense customer interactions; handle a noisy environment.
Clinicians work all shifts; individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules, including shift rotations, may be adjusted to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.
