Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Supplemental Staffing Float Pool-Pediatrics-Nights

Overview

Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs provide support to the organization by floating to multiple units and/or areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS). This flex pool includes Registered Nurses who work within inpatient areas to include adults and/or pediatrics. The flex pool provides support 24/7 to VCUHS inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop and other specialties within VCUHS. Reassignment may occur in 4-hour blocks.

This would also include an opportunity to float to other VCUHS facilities.

Performance Expectation and Nursing Practice The Clinical Nurse II/III roles demonstrate mastery/advanced knowledge of clinical skills, apply knowledge to a specific patient population, and provide direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. These roles safely administer prescribed medications, identify incompatibilities and/or interactions, and mobilize resources to meet individualized patient/family needs. They provide direction, education, leadership at the unit level, and contribute to optimal patient outcomes within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Provide staffing flexibility by floating to multiple inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop and related specialties within VCUHS, including both adult and pediatric populations.
  • Respond to staffing needs 24/7 and reassign in 4-hour blocks as required; may float to other VCUHS facilities.
  • Deliver direct, age-appropriate nursing care and document care according to medical orders and an integrated plan of care.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications and identify potential incompatibilities or interactions.
  • Exhibit leadership, education, and direction at the unit level and collaborate with the healthcare team to meet patient/family needs.
Qualifications and Education

Education/training

REQUIRED:

Clin II, Clin III Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.

All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Education/training PREFERRED: Clin II, Clin III Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program;
Clin III:
Certification in specialty area.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state for Clin II/Clin III.

Experience

REQUIRED:

  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience; experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience;
    Academic Health Care Experience.
Other Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders and adheres to Virginia nursing regulations.
  • Practice guided by ANA Code of Ethics and established national nursing practice standards; follows VCUHS policies and procedures.
  • Clinicians work all shifts, weekends and holidays; shift rotation/schedule established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager; schedules may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
Age, Physical, Mental and Other Requirements
  • Age Specific groups served: as appropriate based on unit assignment.
  • Physical:
    Lifting 0-50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous/infectious substances; activities include prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory:
    Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, writing, and logical thinking.
  • Emotional:
    Fast pace environment with ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent customer interactions; can adapt to a noisy environment.
