Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Supplemental Staffing Float Pool - ICU/Progressive Care - Nights
Overview

VCU Health is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for the Supplemental Staffing Float Pool - ICU/Progressive Care - Nights. The flex pool provides support across VCU Health System inpatient units, including adults and/or pediatrics, and to procedural areas, Perioperative services, and other specialties within VCUHS. RNs float to multiple units 24/7; reassignment may occur in 4-hour blocks. This role may include opportunities to float to other VCUHS facilities.

A $20,000 sign-on bonus is available for offers accepted by November 30, 2025 (terms and conditions apply).

Responsibilities
  • Float to multiple units and areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS), including inpatient units for adults and/or pediatrics, with 24/7 support. Reassignment may occur in 4-hour blocks; there may be opportunities to float to other VCUHS facilities.
  • The Clinical Nurse II scope includes mastering clinical skills and applying knowledge to a specific patient population, assisting the health care team with prevention of illness, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort; recognizing changes in patient situations and intervening appropriately; mobilizing resources to meet the individualized needs of patients/families; providing direction, education, and leadership at the unit level; delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care;

    safely administering medications with attention to interactions.
  • The Clinical Nurse III scope demonstrates higher-level clinical knowledge and leadership: anticipates changes in patient situations, serves as a role model, directs education, and contributes to multidisciplinary care planning; delivers and documents direct, age-specific care per orders and plan of care; safely administers medications and monitors for interactions.
  • Other related responsibilities include ensuring care aligns with unit standards, promoting patient/family engagement, and collaborating with the health care team to optimize patient outcomes.

Qualifications
  • Education/training

    REQUIRED:

    Clin II, Clin III Diploma or an Associate Degree in Nursing from a program recognized and/or approved by the state Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN-to-BSN program within two years of start date and complete the program within five years, unless grandfathered.
  • Education/training PREFERRED:
    Bachelor's degree in Nursing;
    Clin III:
    Certification in specialty area.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.
  • Experience

    REQUIRED:

    Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience;
    Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience; academic health care experience; experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Follows physician/licensed independent provider orders; practices within Virginia nursing regulations; adheres to ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing practice standards; follows VCUHS policies; works all shifts, weekends and holidays; individual shift rotation and schedules coordinated with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager; schedules may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
  • Age-specific groups served:
    As appropriate based on unit assignment.
  • Physical requirements:

    Lifting 0-50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances; activities include prolonged standing/sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, reaching; mental/sensory abilities include recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking; emotional tolerance for fast-paced environments and high-priority interactions.
  • Work environment:
    Clinicians work varied shifts and rotate; schedules established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager; availability to rotate as needed to meet unit requirements.
