Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing Registered Nurses

RNs provide support to the organization by floating to multiple units and/or areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS). This flex pool includes Registered Nurses who work within inpatient areas to include adults and/or pediatrics. The flex pool provides support 24/7 to VCUHS inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop and other specialties within VCUHS. Reassignment may occur in 4‑hour blocks. This would also include an opportunity to float to other VCUHS facilities.

Clinical

Nurse II Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates a mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The job recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. The job mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families.

The job provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. The job delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The job safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse III Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The job anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. The job provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.

The job delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The job safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Performance Expectations – Continuing Nursing Education
  • Employee must complete 15 contact hours of Continuing Nursing Education during this evaluation cycle.
  • Effective July 2012: CN‑III must complete 20 contact hours; failure to achieve the required number of contact hours will result in the employee being ineligible to receive an overall performance rating above “Fully Meets”.
Performance Expectations – Nursing Process
  • Clinical Nurse II demonstrates competent use of the nursing process as a problem‑solving model in performance of job duties as evidenced by focus assessment, recognizing subtle changes, prioritizing care, initiating discharge planning, and coordinating multidisciplinary care.
  • Clinical Nurse III demonstrates competent use of the nursing process as a problem‑solving model in performance of job duties as evidenced by synthesizing knowledge, anticipating and planning to meet patient and family needs, and implementing multidisciplinary care planning.
Performance Expectations – Nurse–Patient Relationship
  • Clinical Nurse II demonstrates ability to develop and maintain a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship throughout the health care continuum as evidenced by effective communication, identifying factors affecting comfort, individualizing approaches, seeking consultation, and mobilizing resources.
  • Clinical Nurse III develops and maintains a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship throughout the health care continuum, adapts communication styles, anticipates variables affecting comfort, and engages in activities to promote positive outcomes.
Performance Expectations – Education
  • Clinical Nurse II demonstrates a commitment to meeting the learning needs of patients and families by assessing readiness, organizing teaching plans, evaluating understanding, and assisting team members.
