The Clinical Nurse I–III roles integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. These roles assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. They deliver and document direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. They safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Roles may provide direction, education, and leadership at the unit level as appropriate to level of practice.
- Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
- Support the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
- Provide direction, education, and leadership within the unit as appropriate to the level of practice.
- Apply clinical knowledge to monitor patient changes, intervene appropriately, and mobilize resources to meet individualized patient/family needs.
- Clinical I (RN I):
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (for hire). - Clinical II (RN II):
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (for hire). - Clinical III (RN III):
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (for hire).
- RN I–III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia; AHA BLS Health Care Provider Certification or equivalent.
- Experience requirements vary by level:
Clin I – N/A;
Clin II – 12 to 24 months RN experience;
Clin III – 3 years clinical experience. - Experience preferred includes: clinical exposure in acute care settings and related patient populations; academic health care experience for higher levels.
- Clin I–III:
Diploma or Associate Degree from a professionally approved nursing program. - All RNs without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years, unless grandfathered.
- Education preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher);
Clin III may include certification in a specialty area.
- Follows physician/licensed independent provider orders.
- Practices within Virginia nursing regulations and adheres to ANA Code of Ethics and national standards.
- Complies with VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
- Clin I–III:
Organizes work and delegates or supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) as applicable.
Position Requirements
- Clin I–III:
Work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
Age-specific groups served as appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical and Mental/Employment Requirements- Physical:
Lifting 20–50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances; activities include prolonged standing/sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast-paced environment; ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent intense interactions; noisy environment.
