We are integrating technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. The Clinical Nurse I role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Responsibilities include providing and documenting direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, and safely administering prescribed medications while identifying incompatibilities and interactions.
Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population. Responsibilities include recognizing changes in patient situations and intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources to meet individualized needs, providing direction and education, and assuming leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
Clinical Nurse III demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Responsibilities include anticipating changes in patient situations, serving as a role model, and facilitating interprofessional collaboration while delivering and accurately documenting direct care.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for HireClin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or related area of practice - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic health care experience; experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting or related area of practice
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
Education/Training PREFERRED- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program - Clin III:
Certification in specialty area
- Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders
- Practice within the boundaries of Virginia nursing regulations
- Practice guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and national nursing practice standards
- Follow VCUHS policies and procedures
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Organize work and delegate and supervise others (RN's, LPN's, care partners, unit secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
Position Requirements
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements.
- Lifting 20–50 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)
- Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking
- Emotional resilience in a fast‑paced environment, steady pace, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent intense customer interactions, noisy environment
Rotating shifts are required.
