Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Supplemental Staffing Float Pool-FT-Pediatrics-Nights

Sign On Bonus

$20,000 Sign On Bonus for offers accepted by February 28, 2026. Terms and Conditions apply.

Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs provide support to the organization by floating to multiple units and/or areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS). This flex pool includes Registered Nurses who work within inpatient areas to include adults and/or pediatrics. The flex pool provides support 24/7 to VCUHS inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop and other specialties within VCUHS. Reassignment may occur in 4‑hour blocks.

This also includes an opportunity to float to other VCUHS facilities.

Clinical Nurse II

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates a mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The nurse recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources to meet individualized patient/family needs, provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level, delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Nurse III

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The nurse assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort, anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, provides direction, education, and serves as a role model, delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Performance

Expectation: (Licensed Nursing Positions Only)

Employee must complete 15 contact hours of Continuing Nursing Education during the evaluation cycle. Effective July 2012: CN‑III must complete 20 contact hours; failure to achieve the required number of contact hours will result in ineligibility for an overall performance rating above "Fully Meets".

Clinical Nurse II demonstrates competent use of the nursing process as a problem‑solving model: focuses assessment on target areas, recognizes subtle changes, evaluates and appropriately alters the plan of care, consistently makes sound clinical decisions, prioritizes and organizes patient care, initiates discharge care planning, and coordinates multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary care.

Clinical Nurse III demonstrates competent use of the nursing process as a problem‑solving model: synthesizes knowledge and experience to anticipate and plan to meet patient and family needs, and proactively implements multidisciplinary care planning for the specific patient population.

Performance Expectation:
Nurse–Patient Relationship

Clinical Nurse II demonstrates ability to develop and maintain a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship: effective communication, identifies factors affecting comfort, individualizes approaches, seeks consultation, involves patients/families in planning, employs a holistic and non‑judgmental approach, and mobilizes resources to prevent negative outcomes.

Clinical Nurse III develops and maintains a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship: respects patients' rights, adapts communication styles, anticipates variables affecting comfort, alters interventions accordingly, assists patients/families to feel control, facilitates participation in recovery, uses a holistic approach, and challenges situations and engages in activities to promote positive outcomes.

Education

Clinical Nurse II demonstrates commitment to learning needs of patients and families: assesses readiness, organizes individualized teaching, evaluates understanding, and assists team members in developing clinical skills.
