The Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (MRICU) is a 28‑bed unit specializing in the care of patients with multisystem organ failure and complex pulmonary needs. Our patients include various respiratory disorders and failures such as COPD, ARDS, status asthmatic us, and pneumonia. The latest advances in care delivery are provided to patients with sepsis, GI bleeds, DKA, oncological issues, acute kidney and liver dysfunction, and acid‑base and metabolic imbalances.
Through true collaboration with the interprofessional team, MRICU nurses translate evidence‑based practice, quality improvement, and research into bedside care, advancing safe, high‑quality care for all patients.
Located in Critical Care Hospital – 4th floor
- 28‑bed adult ICU caring for complex medical and pulmonary patients, including post‑codes, sepsis, GI bleeds, DKA, renal and liver failure, and those requiring bedside procedures and advanced pulmonary and invasive interventions.
- Nurse‑to‑patient ratios are 1:1 and 1:2, with charge nurse, unlicensed assistive personnel and unit secretary support 24/7.
The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. The role assists the health‑care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. The Clinical Nurse I job delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The role assists the health‑care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs, provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
The Clinical Nurse II job delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. The role assists the health‑care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.
The Clinical Nurse III job delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III).
- Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III).

- Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience

Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in an acute care setting. - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic health‑care experience; experience with similar patient population in an acute care setting.
