Unit Overview

Medical Intermediate and Intensive Care Unit (MIICU) – 3rd Floor, Critical Care Hospital. The MIICU is a progressively opening unit with flexible patient acuity ranging from Acute to Intensive Care. This unit proudly provides quality care to Internal Medicine patients of a variety of medical diagnoses including renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatology, infectious disease, endocrine, and gerontology. The team building this unit has been recognized by AACN as a Beacon Gold Unit for Excellence.

Unit

Features
  • 28 bed hybrid unit with progressive and intensive care beds focused on caring for a wide variety of adult medical patients across the full spectrum of their hospital admission.
  • Primary admission diagnoses include respiratory failure, sepsis, multisystem organ failure, GI bleeds, DKA, and significant compromise of kidney and liver failure.
  • Provides new employees the unique opportunity to receive formal training and competencies in both progressive and critical care nursing.
Clinical Nursing Ranks Clinical Nurse I

Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse II

Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs. Serves as a role model in a clinical setting.

Clinical Nurse III

Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.

Licensure and Credentials
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia (or eligible compact state).
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification (or equivalent).
Experience
  • Clinical Nurse I: N/A.
  • Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience.
  • Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience.
Preferred Experience
  • Clinical Nurse I:
    Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting.
  • Clinical Nurse II & III:
    Academic Health Care Experience; experience with similar patient population in an acute care setting.
Education and Training
  • Required:

    Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the state Board of Nursing. All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program. Clinical Nurse III:
    Certification in specialty area.
Additional

Position Requirements

Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotation and schedules will be established with the specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical:
Lifting 20–50 lbs. Other:
Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.

Activities:

Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. Emotional:
Fast pace environment, steady pace, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
