The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at VCU Medical Center provides the only full-service children’s care in Central Virginia, including a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma and Burn Center. Our PICU has been honored with the Silver Beacon Award, and our organization has Magnet designation for the fifth consecutive time and recognition as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center. Our 24-bed PICU cares for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents, addressing a wide range of acute and chronic conditions while guiding families through difficult experiences.
Our nursing team blends advanced clinical expertise with compassion, psychosocial support, and emotional insight for patients and their caregivers.
The Clinical Nurse I role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. This position assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. It delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
It safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.
The Clinical Nurse II role demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. It assists with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It recognizes changes in patient conditions and intervenes appropriately. It mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patients and families. It provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.

The Clinical Nurse III role demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population. It assists with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. It provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. It delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state - Licensure, Certification, or Registration for continued employment:

Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

REQUIRED: - Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience

Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or applicable to area of practice - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic Health Care Experience; experience with similar patient population in acute care or applicable area of practice
- Education/Training
- REQUIRED:
Diploma or Associate Degree from a professional nursing program recognized/approved by the state Board of Nursing. All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered. - PREFERRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing;
Certification in a specialty area (Clin III)

- Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders. Practices within Virginia nursing regulations. Practice guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing standards. All practice follows VCUHS policies and procedures.
