Position Overview:
The Clinical Nurse I/II/III responsibilities integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to provide patient care, education, and leadership at the unit level. Each level builds upon the previous with increasing autonomy and patient population focus.
Provides direct, age‑specific care to patients or patient groups based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers medications, identifies incompatibilities, and supports the health care team in prevention of illness and injury.
Clinical Nurse IIDemonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Recognizes changes in patient status, mobilizes resources, and provides leadership and education to the unit.
Clinical Nurse IIIApplies unit‑level clinical knowledge to a specific patient population. Anticipates changes, intervenes proactively, and serves as a role model and educator in the clinical setting.
Licensure and Certification- Clin I / II / III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state. - Continued employment:
Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12–24 months RN experience.
- Clin III: 3 years clinical experience.
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in acute care or related setting. - Clin II & III:
Academic health care experience and exposure to similar patient populations.
- Required:
Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state Board of Nursing. - All RNs without a BSN must enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered.
- Clin I / II / III:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited program. - Clin III:
Certification in specialty area.
- Follow documented physician/licensed provider orders.
- Practice within Virginia regulations.
- Align with ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies.
- Organizes work, delegates, and supervises RN’s, LPN’s, care partners, and unit secretaries.
Position Requirements
- Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Individual shift rotation and schedules determined by Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
- Shift schedules may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
- Physical: lift 20–50 lbs; exposure to hazardous or infectious substances; prolonged standing, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
- Mental/Sensory: strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking, writing, reading, logical thinking.
- Emotional: fast‑paced environment, multiple priorities, intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
Position includes night shift duties.
