Position: New Grad Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Medicine Unit - Rotating

Progressive Care Medicine is a 28 bed, telemetry unit with 16 progressive care beds, specializing in providing quality care to patients under the Hospital Medicine Service for a variety of complex medical diagnoses including infectious disease, respiratory disorders, acute renal and liver dysfunction. With exceptional teamwork, we strive to provide the best evidenced-based care to our patients. This unit is seeking energetic, compassionate, and safety-focused nurses to join our team.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Nurse I:
    Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs; assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort; provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level; delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care;

    safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities/interactions.
  • Clinical Nurse II
    :
    Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population; assists with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort; recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes; mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs; provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level; delivers and documents direct, age-specific care and safely administers medications.
  • Clinical Nurse III
    :
    Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population; assists with prevention and wellness; anticipates changes and intervenes; provides direction, education, and serves as a clinical role model; delivers and documents direct, age-specific care and safely administers medications.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
Licensure/Certification for continued employment
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience
  • Required
    :
    • Clin I: N/A
    • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
    • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
  • Preferred
    :
    • Clin I:
      Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in acute care or applicable area
    • Clin II, Clin III:
      Academic Health Care Experience; similar patient population in acute care or applicable area
Education/Training
  • Required
    :
    Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized/approved by the state Board of Nursing. All RNs without a BSN must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years and complete within five years unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred
    :
    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher);
    Clin III:
    Certification in specialty area
Independent actions
  • Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practices within regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Practice guided by ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national standards.
  • All practice guided by VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
Supervisory responsibilities
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
    Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.)
Additional position requirements
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
    Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift schedules established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.

  • Physical:
    Lifting 20-50 lbs; exposure to hazardous/infectious substances
  • Activities:

    Prolonged standing/sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching

    Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking
  • Emotional:
    Fast-paced environment, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent interactions, noisy environment
