Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Transitional Care Unit (TCU).
Description:
The 47 bed Transitional Care Unit at CHoR Brook Road is a VCU Health Care Systems pediatric long‑term care facility. The unit provides care to children with tracheotomies, G tubes and ventilators. Over 30 children call our TCU home. We are their nurses, therapists, dentists and specialists – we also serve as teachers, recreation therapists, neighbors and friends.
Role Overview:
The CNA provides restorative nursing care for residents under the direction of Nursing and/or Rehab staff to maximize and maintain the physical functioning and emotional wellness of the residents.
For Hire:
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant certification
For Continued Employment:
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant certification
- Depending on setting, current CPR or BLS certification within 60 days of employment
Required:
- Previous experience providing activities of daily living, monitoring vital signs and caring for the physical and emotional needs of patients
- Previous experience using a personnel computer, keyboard and mouse
Preferred:
- Previous work experience in a long‑term care setting

- Provides direct hands‑on treatment under guidance and supervision of licensed nursing and/or rehab staff and in compliance with hospital policy of unlicensed staff.
- Maintains a safe and resident‑friendly environment of care.
- Ensures resident equipment and materials are kept in good repair.
- Maintains residents’ personal items and environment to optimize care and safety.
- Reports to licensed nurse and/or rehab therapists any changes in condition or concerns regarding residents and seeks assistance as needed.
- Participates in department and team projects as directed.
- Performs duties within scope of certified nursing assistant role.
Position Requirements
- Required to work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Individual shift rotations and schedules will be determined by supervisor.
- Age specific groups served:
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
- Lift 20–50 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, frequent bending, walking, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking
- Steady pace, handle multiple priorities, frequent intense customer interactions, adapt to frequent change
