Election Communications Officer

Overview

The City of Richmond is currently looking to hire a Temporary Full-Time Election Communications Officer to support the Chief Election Officer and the Election Manager in the 2026 General Local and School Election. The Election Communications Officer will lead the overall delivery of all forms of election-related communications by leveraging best practices in both digital and traditional media to provide timely and accurate information to City of Richmond residents and election participants.

• Manage the Election pages on the Election website
• Write and coordinate the publication of statutory and discretionary advertising on the Election
• Prepare and coordinate Election-related media releases and maintain ongoing media relations during the entire Election period
• Develop and coordinate the publication of key print material such as the Voter's Guide and Voter Card, and other material, e.g. election signage, stickers, posters, banners, etc.
• Develop and implement an outreach strategy to promote the election
• Monitor Election-related posts/chats on social media platforms and respond in an accurate and timely manner
• Liaise with the City's Corporate Communications and Marketing Department on election-related matters, such as the design and publication of election-related print material
• Other tasks as may be assigned by the Chief Election Officer or the Election Manager

• Knowledge and experience with content management system
• Demonstrated writing skills and the ability to draft appropriate public-facing communications for a wide variety of mediums and platforms including social media, internet sites, and traditional print media
• Ability to provide research, communication assistance and to liaise with related internal and external organizations and election participants
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively listen
• Must be able to work cooperatively in a team environment and will provide assistance to other key Election program areas if needed
• Must be able to think independently; be proactive; make recommendations and decisions
• The Election Communications Officer will be key member of the core Election team that will ensure a legislatively compliant and efficient Election

• Completion of a University Degree or College program in Communications (or a related applied field such as marketing or journalism) is required AND/OR Diploma in Public Relations. Additional media relations training is beneficial.
• Minimum five years experience in media, communications, marketing or related field along with a good understanding of municipal operations (which may come from related work experience or knowledge gained elsewhere).
• Election experience will be considered an asset.
• An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
