Assistant Counsel
Position Summary:
The Assistant Counsel reports to the University’s Deputy Counsel and provides representation and legal counsel in areas such as contract, employment, higher education law, and other areas. The Assistant Counsel handles the production of records pursuant to the Kentucky Open Records Act, subpoenas, legal orders, and serves as the University Counsel’s designee on the Student Assistance and Intervention Team, boards, committees, and councils as needed.
Additionally, the Assistant Counsel routinely engages in legal review and interpretation of University Policies and Regulations and provides training and written guidance on legal issues as requested.
- Education:
J.D. Required - Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of related legal experience, preferably in contracts, employment and/or higher education law. - Licensure &
Certifications:
Must be a current member in good standing of the Bar in any state at the time of application. Membership with the Kentucky Bar Association must be acquired prior to undertaking the work of this position and, thereafter, must be maintained throughout employment.
- 40% - Provides legal counsel to University Administration and serves as the University Counsel’s designee on the Student Assistance and Intervention Team and on other University boards, committees, and councils as needed. (Essential)
- 30% - Receives, compiles records for, and timely responds to all Kentucky Open Records Act requests as well as subpoenas and other legal orders served on the University. (Essential)
- 5% - Supports the office functions by completing all other duties and special projects as assigned. (Essential)
- 15% - Engages in legal review and interpretation of University Policies and Regulations. (Essential)
- 10% - Provides training and written guidance on legal issues as needed/requested by University constituents. (Essential)
