Location:
Richmond, VA (Hybrid) – candidate must be within a 2‑hour drive. Duration: 6 months initially with possible extension. ON SITE
REQUIRED:
2 days onsite per week (Tuesday and Wednesday) – no exceptions.
Contract:
VA-210625-CAI. The position will start with virtual interviews but may require in‑person follow‑ups.
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Data Office is seeking up to two senior level Power BI/SQL Developers. The role collaborates with Data Office, Business, IT and other stakeholders to support the Data Quality Enhancement initiative. The developer is a self‑starter who prioritizes and manages daily workload.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with overall Power BI/SQL support (development, performance, process, documentation) related to the Data Quality Enhancement initiative.
- Maintain confidentiality of all business data and adhere to VRS data security policies.
- Meet all deliverables within the agreed timeframe.
- Provide regular status updates and attend various meetings as required.
- Develop, design, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards based on business requirements.
- Create interactive visualizations, reports, and dashboards that assist with effective monitoring of Critical Data Elements.
- Advise on best practices in data visualization and report optimization.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and translate into actionable reports.
- Develop, optimize, and maintain SQL queries and stored procedures for data retrieval and manipulation.
- Develop DAX queries to enhance report performance and functionality.
- Develop reports to support KPIs and other performance indicators.
- Provide training and support to end‑users on Power BI and SQL tools.
- Review existing SQL queries, execution plans, partitions, and indexes to determine performance enhancements for long‑running queries.
- Provide alternative options to existing data manipulation techniques (e.g., converting Excel manipulation into solutions that reduce process/cycle time).
- Participate in special projects as directed by the Chief Operating Officer or Data Officer.
- Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience developing reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using Power BI.
- Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience in SQL Server development, including complex queries, stored procedures, and performance tuning.
- Experience writing complex DAX queries.
- Experience with MS SQL Server data modelling and schema design.
- Experience working in an Agile development environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team that includes business and technical stakeholders.
- Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in Pensions Benefit Management programs.
- Experience with other BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Qlik View).
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS).
- Microsoft Certified:
Data Analyst Associate or equivalent. - Other relevant certifications in SQL, Data Analysis, and database management.
Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university (preferred) and 5+ years’ experience with technology or data organizations (required).
This is a contract position starting with a period of at least 6 months. The resource must be available within the next 6 weeks. VRS wishes to interview proposed individuals before final approval.
