The Vice President (VP) of Perioperative Services is responsible for all aspects of operational performance in Perioperative Services, including quality and safety, patient and family experience, growth, access, throughput, and financial performance. This role supports strategic planning, access strategy, operations, financial management, quality initiatives, regulatory compliance, and system integration while fostering a culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. This role collaborates effectively with senior leadership to consider and implement key plans that align with the hospitals and Virginia Commonwealth University Health System’s (VCUHS) mission and vision.

The Vice President, Perioperative Services is responsible for the centralization, standardization, and leadership of peri-operative and procedural-based clinical departments (adults and pediatrics) within the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) and Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR). Locations include pre-operative and post-operative units, procedural units, and operative suites. Supervision includes both hospital-based and ambulatory surgery locations. This role will direct and execute the day-to-day operation objectives for peri-operative and procedural areas in conjunction with enterprise-wide strategic plans.

The incumbent is accountable for designing new and better processes utilizing an interdisciplinary and multi-departmental approach to achieve quality and superior surgical services across the continuum of care.

The Vice President, Perioperative Services will coordinate and evaluate personnel decisions, budget, regulatory compliance, and the provision of services while developing a close working relationship with Department Chairs, appropriate surgeons, proceduralists, anesthesiologists, advanced practice providers, and team-members. This position directs, manages, and coordinates activities of assigned departments or areas in the health system and/or clinics and ensures that processes and procedures in patient care comply with VCUHS, This VP supports and leads from a process improvement perspective, utilizing data from national benchmarks and other sources (e.g. electronic health record) to continually stretch the department towards higher levels of role maintains staffing as volumes change and works collaboratively and interdepartmentally to explore enterprise-wide opportunities to modify systems and processes to further improve quality, access, and/or reduce cost.

The Vice President, Perioperative Services works in collaboration with Associate Chief Nursing Officers, Chief Nursing Officers) and health system leadership to lead, develop, and operationalize programs and services to meet goals across the care continuum and VCUHS entities. The incumbent will create, execute, and refine a framework for excellence in peri-operative nursing practice that is evidence-based, ensures competencies, and includes best practices, resulting in high-performing clinical teams.

As a member of the nursing executive team, the Vice President, Perioperative Services, will help shape the clinical practice model, promote a culture of professional accountability and excellence of nursing practice, and implement programs, systems, and processes to achieve the VCUHS and Nursing Service’s strategic goals.

The VP Perioperative Services supports the VCU Health System in efforts that lead to recognition within the healthcare community for excellence in nursing, maintenance of program and fellowship accreditation, and designation as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Areas of oversight include, but are not limited to, adult and pediatric operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, pre-operative areas, endoscopy suites, high-level disinfection and sterile processing departments, pre-op anesthesia clinic, and ambulatory surgery center(s).
