Overview
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor provides day-to-day supervision for an assigned Imaging area (e.g. Diagnostic, Breast Imaging, Stony Point, CT/MR, US) to include STAR Service, legal and regulatory compliance, clinical operations, human resources, safety and quality, customer service, leadership, and fiscal responsibility.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor ensures that all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed by qualified and competent staff, are of the highest quality achievable and follow the radiation safety principles of ALARA, ACR Guidelines for imaging practices, and ACR Guidelines for MRI Safety, if applicable. Ensures compliance with VCU and VCUHS policies and procedures.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor works directly with lead technologists and front line staff to solve problems and reduce barriers to success. This position implements new initiatives, programs and policies.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor works collaboratively with other Imaging Supervisors, Managers, Faculty and staff to ensure a high level departmental safety, quality, and teamwork.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor reports to the Modality Manager and is responsible for the clinical functions and processes for assigned Imaging area. Through lead technologists and staff the Imaging Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the daily clinical operation of the assigned sections by ensuring the highest level of operational excellence while ensuring safety, efficient, high quality and cost effective care.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor supervises, oversees, maintains and improves business functions and processes related to his/her areas of responsibility. This position develops staff education and competencies including educational materials, competency forms, etc.
The Ultrasonographer Supervisor provides education to assigned team, students, residents, and other learners. Supervisors work within the Scope of Practice of his/her specialty. Scope of Practice by specialty is described in the Staff Technologist job description for each specialty. Supervisors will maintain technical competency in all areas of responsibility.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire- Current ARRT(S) or RDMS or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as Vascular Technologist or CCI certification in medical sonography (for Sonography Supervisor only)
- Current CPR Certification by American Heart Association or within 6 months of hire date
- For Sonography Supervisor:
Current ARRT(S) or RDMS Certification or RDCS or CCI or RVI - Current CPR Certification
- REQUIRED:
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible Diagnostic Radiology experience
- Experience performing in a leadership role
- Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment
- REQUIRED:
Graduation from an CAAHEP or CMA Accredited Program in medical/cardiac/vascular sonography or - Graduation from a minimum of a 2 year JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology or
- Sonography that is recognized by the ARRT or JRC
- Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Radiation Science or closely related field from an accredited program is strongly preferred.
- Master s Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration or closely related field from an accredited program is preferred.
- All day to day workflow coordination and team supervision.
- Advice and guidance sought from Manager on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity of the modality.
- All team members in assigned modality report to this position; day to day workflow responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.
- Supervisors are expected to cover unplanned absences for staff that may occur on any shift, as needed.
- Weekend and other after hour coverage may be required based on workload demand and teaming needs.
