Job OverviewThe Med Tech 3 will perform the duties of a technical specialist in the laboratory, performing advanced analysis in specific laboratory areas and diagnostic tests on patient samples. The role assists supervisors with daily operations of specific laboratory sections and serves as the primary technical resource, coordinating quality control procedures, troubleshooting, maintaining procedure manuals, training, documentation, method evaluations, and inventory control within the primary area of responsibility.
The position provides leadership, training, teaching, and mentoring of junior scientists, residents, students, and other lab staff.
- Serves as the primary technical resource, providing advanced problem‑solving and on laboratory testing, result interpretation, and equipment performance.
- Performs moderate and highly complex laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses with minimal supervision, following the laboratory’s standard operating procedures.
- Maintains, reviews, and documents laboratory quality control procedures, ensuring accurate test results and coordinating maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Receives, prepares, processes biological specimens for testing and/or transportation to the main lab or reference labs.
- Assists with maintaining daily operations oversight of assigned lab area and/or shift, monitoring and managing inventory, and ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
- Provides technical guidance, training, and teaching to staff, students, and residents, and assists with competency assessments.
- Participates in laboratory process improvement activities, performing proficiency testing and ensuring proficiency testing is performed in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Develops and evaluates new methodologies, writes, reviews, and revises technical procedures.
- Actively participates in CAP inspections, adhering to established protocols and regulatory standards to ensure laboratory compliance with all accreditation agencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned and participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department of Pathology.

Employment Qualifications- Required
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science in addition to graduation from an NAACLS‑accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor’s Degree in Life Science/Biological Science or Chemical Science with 8 or more years of on‑the‑job training in a hospital health care environment in a specific lab discipline performing high‑complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (categorical or generalist certification required). - Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.
- Current Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) National Certifying Agency or equivalent ASCP categorical certification.
- Maintains required CE hours as required by the Board of Certification Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). (ASCP certification prior to January 1, 2004, is exempt.)
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Experience may be specific to particular specialty areas such as Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology, etc.
