Overview

Join the Surgical First Assist Certified PRN team at CJW Medical Center in Mechanicsville, VA. This part‑time role supports a high volume of surgical cases with a focus on patient safety and peri‑operative efficiency.

Job Summary

As a Certified Surgical Assistant PRN, you will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR nursing staff to prepare, assist, and maintain a sterile surgical environment. The position is fully remote with required on‑site presence for surgical shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the setup of the operating room, ensuring all instruments, drapes, and supplies are available and sterile.
  • Support the surgical team during all phases of the procedure, including incision, tissue handling, hemostasis, and specimen collection.
  • Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique and surgical safety protocols at all times.
  • Collaborate with anesthesia staff to monitor and maintain patient vital parameters throughout the case.
  • Manage the instrument tray and coordinate the supply chain during the surgical shift, reporting any shortages or equipment issues immediately.
  • Document all surgical steps and patient data in the electronic medical record accurately and in a timely manner.
Qualifications
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Current certification as a (SA) Surgical Assistant or (CSA) Certified Surgical Assistant.
  • Registered Nurse diploma or higher level of education (higher is preferred).
  • At least 1 year of experience in an operating room environment, ideally in a PRN or full‑time surgical assistance role.
  • Strong knowledge of sterile technique, instrument handling, and peri‑operative processes.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
