Position Overview

The Clinical Dietitian levels I and II provide and document nutrition care to patients as applicable to their practice area.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • For Clinical Dietitian I:
    May be registry eligible, but must pass the RD exam within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Advancement from Clinical Nutrition I to II is required one year after passing the RD exam.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
  • Maintenance of RD status with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • CPR training for outpatient nutrition clinic practice
Experience Required
  • Clinical Dietitian I:
    Less than 1 year of experience in an acute care setting
  • Clinical Dietitian II: 1 or more years of experience as a Registered Dietitian in an acute care setting (unless grandfathered in)
Preferred Experience
  • For Clinical Dietitian II:
    Experience counseling in acute or outpatient care, outpatient specialty certifications, training in weight management, clinical research protocols
Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or related field from an accredited institution
  • Preferred:
    Specialty certifications, training in motivational interviewing, experience with clinical research protocols
Independent Actions

Perform nutrition care activities as per departmental policies. Cannot provide nutrition care to end-stage renal patients until one year post-registration.

Medical Nutrition Therapy Patient Orders

After competency is confirmed: modify diets, order snacks, supplements, enteral feedings, and take measurements. Communicate with healthcare team and food service, provide staff in-services.

Additional Requirements
  • Work weekends as assigned
  • Work in diverse environments, adhere to professional ethics
  • Travel to satellite clinics as needed
  • Flexibility for pediatric outpatient hours, including evenings
Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • Physical: lifting, standing, sitting, bending, walking, reaching, repetitive motions
  • Mental/Sensory: recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking, reading
  • Emotional: handle fast-paced, changing environment, customer interactions
