Job Summary

The Surgical Assistant serves in an assistant role in the provision of care to patients undergoing surgery under the supervision of the provider, following federal, state and local regulations and organizational policies. Entry‑level practitioner focused on learning and growth.

Essential Functions
  • Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning and gloving according to policy. Functions as first or second assist, fulfills the scrub role as needed, checks instruments, assists with sponge, sharps and instrument counts, handles specimens per hospital policy.
  • Protects patient information, participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse patient care events, actively participates in Universal Protocol procedures, ensures correct surgical site.
  • Communicates effectively with the circulating nurse regarding missing or malfunctioning instruments and reports implants, devices, drains and packing.
  • Assists with OR case preparation, establishes sterile field, opens supplies, monitors sterile field.
  • Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, Foley catheterization and draping.
  • Under direct observation of the surgeon may insert secondary trocars, place instruments through trocars, use power equipment and stapling devices (excluding skin stapling), inject infiltration local anesthetic, use sponges and suction, perform cauterization, place retractors, irrigate wound sites, handle suture material, tie sutures, assist with drains, and participate in wound closure. Applies wound dressings including medicated dressings.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program (required)
Required Licensing & Certifications
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred upon hire)
  • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) – NBSTSA, NSAA or NCCSA (required). If hired in Virginia before July 1, 2020, preferred; if hired in Cincinnati, preferred.
  • If employed in Virginia, must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine (required).
Experience
  • One year of health care experience (preferred)
